Nullifiers of Islam
(Nawaqid Al-Islam)
Shaykh Muhammad Bin Abd Al-Wahhab

Translated by

Quran explained by

-----------------------------------------------------

He said -may Allah's mercy be upon him-:

Know that the things that nullify Islam are ten: the first: polytheism, which is worshipping other gods besides the One God who is alone should be worshipped. Allah, the Exalted, said: Verily, Allâh forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills. (Al-Nisa': 48), and He said: Surely, they have disbelieved who say: "Allâh is the Messiah [‘خsâ (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary)." But the Messiah [‘خsâ (Jesus)] said: "O Children of Israel! Worship Allâh, my Lord and your Lord." Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allâh, then Allâh has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode[1]. And for the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers. (Al-Ma'idah: 72). And, polytheism could be slaughtering animals for other than the One God, like slaughtering animals for Jinn or graves.

The second: he commits Kufr by Ijma' whoever places mediums between himself and Allah, mediums that he calls upon, ask forgiveness from, or rely on.

The third: he commits Kufr whoever does not apply the Kufr principle upon polytheists, or whoever doubts that polytheists are infidels, or whoever corrects polytheists' path.

The fourth: he is a disbeliever whoever thinks that another guidance is better than prophet Muhammad's guidance, or another judgement is better than prophet Muhammad's judgement, such as preferring Tawagheet's (evil) judgement over prophet Muhammad's judgement.

The fifth: he commits Kufr whoever hates something that prophet Muhammad -peace and blessings be upon him- came with, even if he practices it.

The sixth: he commits Kufr whoever mocks some of God's religion, some of God's reward, or some of God's punishment. The evidence on that is the saying of Allah, the Exalted: If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allâh, and His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations) and His Messenger that you were mocking?" * Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimûn (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals.) (Al-Tawbah: 65-66).

The seventh: magic, which is two types: Al-Sarf (making someone hates someone or something) and Al-Atf (making someone loves someone or something). He commits Kufr whoever does it or accept it. The evidence on that is the saying of Allah, the Exalted: Sulaimân did not disbelieve, but the Shayâtîn (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Hârût and Mârût, but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, "We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us)." (Al-Baqarah: 102).

The eighth: helping polytheists against Muslims. The evidence on that is the saying of Allah, the Exalted: And if any amongst you takes them (as Auliyâ’), then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allâh guides not those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers and unjust). (Al-Ma'idah: 51).

The ninth: he is a disbeliever whoever believes that some people are able to leave the Sharia' of prophet Muhammad -peace and blessings be upon him- as Al-Khidr was able to leave the Sharia' of Moses -peace be upon him-.

The tenth: the unwillingness to learn or practice the religion of God. The evidence on that is the saying of Allah, the Exalted: And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of his Lord, then turns aside therefrom? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the Mujrimûn (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners). (Al-Sajdah: 22).

And, there is no difference in the things that nullify Islam between mocker, serious, and scared, expect for forced. Also, all of these things (nullifiers of Islam) are great danger, and they are most likely to happen, so a Muslim should be careful from them, and should be afraid on himself from them. We seek refuge in Allah from His anger and His punishment
